The Cooperative Education program allows students to combine learning in the classroom with real world experience. Students put their academic knowledge into action through 3 terms of relevant, paid work experience.
How does a student apply for the Co-op program? Students with no more than 75 credits toward their degree are eligible to apply to Co-op. Applicants to the BCom program can apply to Co-op at the same time as they apply to the BCom program.
Application to Co-op is separate from application to the BCom program. You must apply for admission to the BCom program prior to applying to Co-op. Please consult the Co-op website for further details. What is the Cohort Program? The Cohort program places new BCom students Year 2 into groups for their first year in the program. The minimum entrance requirements for most institutions is a bachelors pass or matric exemption. The BCom consists of compulsory units, known as 'courses', which are recognized as the foundational concepts of business.
These core units include subjects like economics, business management, accounting principles, financial management and information systems amongst others.
Students who enter a BCom programme will have to select a 'stream' or 'major' at some point during their studies. A major represents an area of specialisation. Admission requirements for the BCom include a Matriculation exemption certificate , with a demonstrated competence in Mathematics HG-D symbol or SG-B symbol if you matriculated prior to You also need to have passed English HG - first or second language - with at least a D symbol prior to or English Home Language or first Additional Language from on level 5.
For automatic entry into the BCom, a matriculation exemption and a matric admission rating score of 26 with Mathematics and English is required if you matriculated prior to Subsequent to , you need to have 39 points, in addition to the above Maths and English requirements. Students with credits from Unisa or other South African universities may be considered for certain credits or exemptions, on condition that they meet the entry requirements as detailed above.
Students who meet all the above entrance requirements , but who narrowly miss the Maths requirement, need to first complete a Maths for Access certificate course for a year also offered by Wits Plus. The Wits Plus Bachelor of Commerce degree is a nine-course curriculum including two majors spread over three levels.
You earn points as you progress through courses, with a minimum total of points required for completion of the degree, which can take you between 4 to 6 years as a part-time student.
