Neat little camera and finally fairly priced. Too bad Nikon hasn't seen fit to release any fast zooms for it. It even eclipses the V3 in many areas. Now we need some for real good optics among the 1 Nikkor range. The lenses are optically excellent, they are simply not fast. I have a V1 and now a J5 for my 1Nikkor lens collection, I'd be reluctant to buy more expensive bodies for these lenses.
This is the reason I'm building an E-mount system, and maybe a micro43 system later. Finally a reasonable launch price. It means that by waiting few months we can get it for awesome I have an AW1, and was hoping to get a second Nikon 1 with better specs for the nicer lenses - this may very well be it - inexpensive enough, while still decently powerful.
The stock PD zoom is good enough as a prime, I have the "nicer" lenses already. I have the How do you like your AW 1. I was looking at this camera as I wanted to get something that can go under water, however I have seen several reviews that said it leaked.

Sounds like a massive flaw with capitalism and suggests that if you buy anything at all you shouldn't buy a product until at least the third version when some of those features they've deliberately withheld have been finally included.
Manufacturers manipulate markets all the time regarding features on products. Nikon and Canon have been starving their lesser camera models of features for years, just to protect the more expensive models. In my country Volkswagen recently introduced the Volkswagen Up, but only with two doors. At the same time they stopped selling the competing Polo Vivo model with two doors. So you're forced to buy the Up if you want two doors, and the Vivo if you want four doors.
I can't believe that an experienced and wealthy company like Nikon realy needs five chances to get a camera right. The J5 is the first in this series that doesn't feel crippled. Unfortunately it's too expensive. Luckily for us Nikon pumps out new models all the time and the prices of the previous models go down very fast with each new model. Make sure you buy these cameras cheap, don't pay the introduction price.
Right now people,are already beginning to dump their V3's, because a V4 is on its way. The J4 can be had for a good price, because the J5 is here. I tried the Nikon J5 in a store and I was a little disappointed with the build quality.
It didn't feel very sturdy and even a bit plasticy. Seems to be a fine successor of the J4 though. Any information regarding using external flashes? IT would be nice to disable the TTL of the in build flash and fire it a small power just to trigger an external flash Alex. The Hogan had noted the differences between the Nikon 1 sensor and m43rds and Sony are closer than one would think, and based on my own testing owning all three cameras I came to the same conclusion.
I see it has both a micro SD and regular SD slot in the specifications. Handy for tablette users I guess for direct upload. MicroSD only I am fairly certain, like the j4 that I just picked up on fire sale. I don't see it as a disadvantage. Chances are if I am packing a laptop, I will have room for a micro to regular SD adapter as well, whereas if I am carrying just the cam with a phone or tablet, the micro form factor comes in pretty handy.
The question is whether or not the J5 supports UHS What you won't see in any of these slides is the microSD slot, which sits next to the battery on the bottom of the J5. The question is when. The latest V3 model also only has micro SD.
Why would Nikon think the target audience would only want micro SD slot? Unless someone wanted to take out the microSD to put images directly in a tablette to view immediately on larger tablette screen without transfer, as a tablette can access microSD directly may appeal to some buyers. Samsung have several very high definition 10 inch tablettes now. I just do not like the extreme small sized card of micro SD. Wish card were bigger. Not enough room is a very weak argument.
The Sony rxm3 is smaller has a viewfinder built-in and a much brighter lens. All with the same sensor size and it comes with a full size SD card slot. The Panasonic gm-1 is smaller has a sensor double the size and comes with a full SD card slot. The only reason i can think off is stupidity.
I agree. Any serious user, if finding out it had only a micro SD, might pass on the camera, as taking such a tiny card in and out of any camera is a pain to do to upload to tablette or laptop, in my opinion. That is a bit odd, if so Whats taking Nikon so long here. I'm not so sure about 4K at15 fps I'd prefer 5 fps. Slower is always safer, that's what grandma used to say. Personally I don't get the value of video on a camera, I mean it's cool to have but how often do people use it?
A majority of my photog friends don't even use video, heck I was at a photography seminar in Atlanta and there were over people there, only a handful noted they shot video when they were polled by the guest speaker. Hopefully Nikon releases some fast zooms and primes. One of the biggest turn offs for me was the size of Olympus and Fuji pro zooms which defeat the purpose of having a smaller body. I think the future of mirror less rests with 1 inch sensor where more practical sized lenses can be produced.
This isn't meant to be an enthusiast''s only camera. Use something like this for its speed that currently no other format can match. Congrats, I preordered the black and two extra lenses. I will also get the I couldn't get nice images from it.
Colors are muted and it lacks contrast. I don't know, i wanted to love it since I'm more leaning to 35mm, but man, the Otherwise, nobody is going to "see" the J5 anyway. It is so small that it would be invisible behind the lens. And then it's possible to get vastly different results in raw. Example my raws are much better for noise than those that DPR posted.
And I repeated this oddness. It's a bit of a mystery. I respect DPReview but my own real world results often are quite different from theirs: For example they maintain that image quality is basically just a big step up from a smartphone and yet my images look practically indistinguishable from DSLRs under most conditions. There is nothing to prevent Aptina from copying or even refining the Sony 1" sensors. The two companies have a sharing agreement. And Nikon is doing a good job with this policy.
The sony division that designs and makes sensors is completely separated from their camera division. There should be no valid reason to avoid sensors from Sony. I said it before and I say it again: No Viewfinder, no buy. Its that darn simple. Another one: No raw format, no buy. Its the "Simple Checklist if Thomas will buy the new camera.
The dynamic range in the V1 was nice, the fast AF was indeed prime class, but the shot-to-shot time was abysmal, so was the up to 8sec waking time of the V1. That was the deal killer in the V1 for me. And than came the Mr. Robato and Homer Simpson designed V2, arguably the "most ugly shape ever devised by any camera maker". I just dumped the V1, be gone, good riddance. I just got the V2 in white.
While it's very subjective, I think it's one of the most beautiful designs I have seen in a mirror less body. Nikon 1 cameras are some of the most attractive on the market if you prefer the clean minimalistic Apple styling.
Uh, i disagree : I was shocked when i saw the V2. I would kill for my V1 but never touch the V2. Functional, the V2 makes a lot of sense, but asthetic wise: no way. Funny thing is with Dark Goob's extreme prejudiced views is that people will discount anything he says because they are so prejudiced!
People who constantly troll like that often suffer from insecurities. Maybe he secretly desires the 1 system but is already tied up in another system, so it's easier to lash out against Nikon 1 then to agree that it is a very attractive looking system.
The constant negativity towards Nikon 1 makes him feel better about his purchase and in return helps with his self esteem. I think people's comments often say more about themselves than about the product under discussion. Except the pixel count is wrong. And why would Nikon be the first with a 1" phase detect AF sensor from Sony? Technically it can't be because ON Semiconductor bought Aptina. But does it matter? The final image quality is what I'm concerned with.
There was an article that stated that Aptina and Sony entered into a cross patent license agreement in Either way less excuse to not improve image quality by now. Well, regardless of the sensor or until we know for certain , the control layout and design of the body is a huge improvement on the J-series. It appears less "dumbed-down" now and actually configurable. Right, some of the 1 cameras have a junk menu access system--looks to be mostly fixed with the J5.
I'm looking into this camera but now i'm not sure. Why junk? You do set yourself up, you know. That's all you can do as a "tech writer"? What, you want a book or something? So, Ok, for my book, why do you spend so much time attacking Nikon. Is it an impulse you can't control? They make pills for that. Anyway, for the price this looks like a pretty decent camera, without knowing the quality of the new sensor.
We already know the AF will be class leading, and the new controls are a big plus. The price is where it should have been years ago. It will be interesting to see if the new sensor and other improvement make there way into a new V series camera.
Nikon has pretty much said with this new release that they are in it for the long haul with the 1 system. Now you seems put your feet together as "They make pills for" "an impulse you can't control? With this camera the J series makes sense for the first time to me. But the ambition of J 5 design in N1 concept, although likeable, is very bold, so bold that it borders on naive. But this naivety or boldness makes sense from Nikon.
And what makes sense can succeed somewhat. But mainly it makes some sense and it even seems to have got a little seed of mission in it. When something makes sense it keeps its dignity.
