You can check out the full list of fishing zones below if you want some variety, but fishing in a higher level zone will mean that more fish get away. Any starting zone will work for your first 50 levels. The rest of the guide will be easier if you stick to the waters of Stormwind City. Once you get to 50 fishing, learn journeyman fishing from Arnold Leland just northwest of The Trade District.

And the results are I fished it out of the 2nd Bloodsail Wreckage I came across along with 2 more Mithril Bound Trunks that I'll be sending to my other toons that don't have the Find Fish ability yet.
You actually get scenery to look at other than brown barren ground. Comment by Avilda I actually got the book out of the green bag you get doing the daily fishing quest in Stormwind. XD It was a nice surprise. Comment by Petrograd I got this doing a daily in Orgrimmar. So it just tracks nodes? However, it seems to have stopped doing that as of at least 09 Mar Comment by I got this ability, but when I turned it on I couldn't see a buff or things on my mini-map.
Then I went to Howling Fjord and I found a school there, so there just aren't schools of fish where I was looking. They are phased out just like all other mobs in the area. To get it back, you have to finish the respective quest chain and also leave Stranglethorn to get out of the phasing. Comment by Took me around 10 fishing dailies in Stormwind, but I finally got the book. Comment by I finally figured out how this works! It's clear that from fishing so much, the fish-police put you on a registered fish offender list, and ban you from any nearby schools.
Comment by Lucilite I like how pre-Cata, when you got the ability you also got a button for it in your spellbook that you could put in your action bar or maybe it just appeared in your action bar automatically, I forget. Can someone tell me how to make a macro that will do it?
I just don't know the macro codes for tracking stuff. Comment by I rrecieved the journal from the bag of shiny things rewarded from a Stormwind fishing daily. My fishing skill was only about at the time. Comment by Just found and fished from my first "Waterlogged Wreckage" and got the trunk off the first one and in the trunk had the Journal.
Found at the inlet in Dustwallow. I had totally forgotten about this book! Once you folks jogged my memory, I remember fishing up 10 of these books in Wetlands. Took my Pandarian Monk there and the first fishing spot for Oily Blackmouth yielded up the book in a iron bound trunk.
EDIT: All the way to patch 7. I took my Demon hunter over to Wetlands to fish up the journal only to find that there are no longer ANY pools along the Wetlands coast anymore! Not to worry. I flew over to Hillsbrad Foothills to fish the pools there along the coast and got my journal. I took my Dark Iron alt there for questing and fished up the journal in a pool after about 25 casts or so in various pools.
Still inside assorted trunks that can be had from ANY kind of fishing pool. Do fish in a pool tho and wreckage will have a higher drop rate of trunks. Comment by fishstix I got this while doing the Orgimmar fishing daily. You also have to have a fishing level of to learn Find Fish. Comment by cephadex After learning the skill, to activate it go to the 'tracking' tab hourglass on your minimap, then check 'find fish.
EDIT: my bad, it's a magnifying glass, not an hourglass thanks, famousjenny! A Sealed Crate appears to not be one of the many containers that can contain the journal.
While you will receive many interesting and useful items, I wouldn't bother looking for the Weather-Beaten Journal to learn Find Fish on Darkmoon Island.
There appears to be many more locations with positive results. Took less than a minute to get the book. Comment by scollinsgt I found this just now in STV I looted it on my 3rd Mixed Ocean School node. Comment by Monthy Think I've written about this before, but if so It now needs to be underlined even more. To get the weather-beaten Journal, the last 4 times I've with success done exactly the same routine.
Take the portal in Stormwind to the Dark Portal. To the right of this crate is always a floating wreckage unless somebody just fished it that I fish in. It drops red crates every time, last time it dropped 4 crates on 4 throws and the journal was in the first.
Thought I would get 1 journal extra for my last char. Now I only have my eleventh char left on this realm and he will for sure also do the same routine. Comment by Theolol During patch 6. Incidental details: I was at level 90 with under fishing skill. So I'm going to have to get 25 more before I can even use the book haha.
Comment by kwjohnstone Where i've gone for every toon since HFP was released, was Zangarmarsh in hellfire, not the new one You're welcome. Side note, requires fishing to read, but not to get. Comment by td Not sure if this has been asked, but my level 16 Human Paladin got this so far she's the only one who's gotten it but I can't find the actual spell.
I had assumed it would be next to the fishing spell under the professions tab but it wasn't. I looked in all of my Abilities as well. I also saw that it required level 40, but I was able to read the book fine once I had gotten fishing. Maybe I need to be level 40 for it to show up so I can use it? Maybe I'm just not looking in the right place? I'm not sure. Also, I had got the book from Catherine Leland in Stormwind.
I was doing her second daily quest, to catch some kind of bass by digging up overgrown earth worms and attaching them to your line. She gave me 2 fishing skill points and a bag of shiny things, which contained the book. Comment by anonsequitur You no longer have to fish in nodes containing debris to find a journal that teaches "find fish. The other three were found in fishing nodes that contained no debris. Of course, all journals were contained in boxes or chests fished from the nodes.
Comment by jhessail found a water tight trunk while fishing a sagefish school in wetlands moss hide fen. Comment by Septh Seems this ability was removed in 7. I'll try and see if getting another Weather-Beaten Journal helps.
