For the purposes of this Canva tutorial, we will be recreating the image seen below, although the white outline effect can be applied to any image background. Canva offers a wide selection of images. Select an image in Canva. Specifically, the photo of of a woman with a dark blue background, as seen below. Next, we will change the background to a green color.
While you can use any color for the background, avoid white since it will make it harder to see the contrast between the background and the white outline. The next step is to remove the background from the image. To do this, click on the image, click on effects , and click on background remover tool on the left hand menu. Note : This method only works for Canva Pro users. If you have the free version of Canva, and want to make you image background transparent, you can use RemoveBG as a free alternative.
Next, we are going to duplicate the background-free image. Click on the duplicate icon in the upper right hand menu:. The next step is to edit your image using Duotone Effects, one of the built in effects offered by Canva. To do this, first click on one of your images of the woman. Choose the color white. Click on the "Background" layer to change the transparent layer to a white layer. Click the "Eye" icon next to the layer name to hide the layer.
Click on the brush tool to make a choice of brush and color to use on the outline. Choose the brush tip desired and select a color from the Color panel. Click on the "Pen" tool in the toolbar. Use this tool to create a path around the image by selecting points along the image contours that the pen line follows, outlining the object.
Click on the edge of the image at the beginning of an image curve. Move the pen to the end of that curve and click on the edge of the image again. A line appears that follows the path between the two points. Curve the line by holding down the mouse button and dragging it to the left or right to produce a curved line.
