The incident took place during the annual Ladies Masters Tournament. In addition to that, he damaged his spinal cord as well as fracturing his neck. After the accident, John went into coma however he was unable to move or talk. John Kennerley took an extensive rehab in hospital for about eight months eventually regaining his ability to move and talk freely.

He got married to his then-girlfriend and now-wife in the year at the Sydney Opera House. My husband started as my great friend before we fell in love and has stayed that way.
